The Hockney Gallery

To celebrate David Hockney's  80th birthday in 2017, Cartwright hall has created a permanent gallery to showcase his early work and provide an introduction to his life and art with a particular focus on Yorkshire and Bradford.

The Hockney area contains works spanning his career, and unseen photos from his personal albums.

The Studio

This area of the Hockney gallery is intended to give you an idea of the techniques and processes he used to create his art.

It includes a film of him sat in his Bridlington studio

On the wall is a giant ipad on which you can watch how he created his digital sketches

Now living in Los Angeles, Hockney was born in the Eccleshill area of Bradford on July 9, 1937 and attended Bradford College Of Art before going on to study at the Royal College of Art.

Although Cartwright Hall gallery does include one of Hockney’s trademark swimming pool paintings, hung on a wall painted in a particularly striking Farrow and Ball pink and some of his more recent works created on an iPad, the emphasis is on his early years paintings of street scenes and launderettes and markets, which he did while at Bradford School of Art,

Much of the work on display already belonged in the Bradford art collection, but Hockney has also opened up his private family albums photos from his personal albums which include shots of him in the US standing by his beloved blue California pools soon after moving there for the first time in the 1960s.
